Cat Loving Expat

My first cat, Butterscotch, was adopted from a shelter by my parents when I was a little boy. Since then, I've always had a furbaby in house. When I was a teenager, I rescued a cat from a terrible thunderstorm. After searching for weeks for her owners, my parents and I ended up adopting her. We named her Cleopatra because she managed to seduce my parents into letting her stay.

I have always been great with animals, especially skittish ones. For nine years during my childhood I worked at a petting farm and earned the nickname "chicken boy" for the unique way I could handle the chickens. I would even take my lunch break in the emu pen where the Emu, Sweetpea, would fall asleep on my lap getting her head scratched while I ate my sandwiches.

At university I raised a service dog from eight weeks old to sixteen months, socializing and training him to eventually be placed with an eight year old boy in a wheelchair. Hoshi, which means Star in Japanese, made a world of difference in that little boy's life.

After graduation, I adopted a kitten from a shelter and named her Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon the Lionhearted, Ciri for short, named after a playful princess in the videogame series The Witcher. She saved my life when I struggled with loneliness and depression after moving to the middle of nowhere for work. She was my anchor, her love and affection meant the world to me.

When I immigrated to the Netherlands in late 2020, the airline refused to allow me to bring Ciri with me because of Covid... Thankfully, she is being well cared for and loved by my parents in the United States. I miss her dearly, and no amount of cat sitting can replace the bond we shared, but it's better than nothing.

I now live in Zwolle, and am making a new life here. Because of my situation as an expat, I was unable to find an apartment that allows animals. I'm incredibly thankful that services like Cat In A Flat exist so that I can get my kitten fix, and even help others who need a helping hand with their feline friends!

I'm happy to share daily pictures of your furbaby, and to spend substantial time comforting and playing with them. I have experience giving medicine to cats (and dogs) including injections if necessary. Animals of all walks of life trust me, I hope you feel comfortable trusting me with yours.
